1. WITHDREW FROM COMPETITION

USA gymnastics star Simone Biles has dropped out of the individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Olympics to “prioritize her well-being,” USA Gymnastics announced early Wednesday morning.

This comes a day after Biles withdrew from the gymnastics team competition in Tokyo due to mental health concerns.

“Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many,” USA Gymnastics said.

2. VACCINE-OR-TEST FOR FEDERAL EMPLOYEES

President Biden on Thursday will announce a mandate that federal employees and contractors either get vaccinated for Covid-19 or be tested regularly, CNN reports, citing a source with direct knowledge of the matter. There are roughly 2 million federal employees and 4 million contractors for the federal government.

This announcement will come days after the Department of Veterans Affairs instated a vaccine requirement for medical facility employees, becoming the first agency to issue such a mandate.

3. MASKS IN SCHOOLS

Starting Friday, New York City is giving $100 to anyone who gets their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine at a city-run site, the Mayor’s Office announced.

Other cities and states are offering similar incentives. Medicaid members in Ohio receive a $100 gift card for getting the shot. New Mexico and Colorado are also giving away $100 to those who get vaccinated. Many states and localities held lotteries for vaccinated people.

4. NEVADA MASK MANDATE

Nevada reinstated its statewide mask mandate in counties with “substantial or high transmission” after the CDC reversed its guidance on face coverings.

The new mandate will apply to Clark County, which includes the city of Las Vegas.

Republican Senators negotiating an infrastructure deal announced they have come to an agreement with Democrats on “major issues,” paving the way for a vote.

"We are prepared to move forward,” said Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio).
